In 1881 worked for James Hall farmer @ Bythorn House, Bythorn - James Hall had a number of servants and agricultural workers and their families at his farm.
In the 1891 census he is shown as living at Poplars Lodge, Great Addington
Jemima was born in Pertenhall which is (& was) a small village about one and a half miles south of Kimbolton (on the the B660) about half a mile from the border of Huntingdonshire (now Cambridgeshire). The parish has a fine limestone church of St. Peters which is in the Deanery of Sharnbrook and a church has existed on the site since the 12th Century. The name Pertenhall is thought to be a corruption of "Purton Hill" -Purton being the old english name for a church.
In the 1881 census there is no mention of a Jemima May LEWIS or PECK.The nearest match is that of a girl May PECK who is a servant in thehousehold of John J. STEVENSON at Stephenson's House, Weekley, Northants.her age is given as 15 whereas she would only be 13 or at the most 14 (as she was bapt. on 27 Oct 1867). It is of course possible that her age was misrepresented and her name given as PECK rather than LEWIS to hide her original illegitimancy.
He was always known as Edward throughout his life but was registered as David. He was born in Staffordshire and the church where he was baptised was burnt down. The church at which was baptised is believed to be St. Giles at RowleyRegis as this was burned down in 1913. Arson was suspected and suffragets were blamed at the time but this was never proved and the true cause of the fire remains a mystery. The church that was destroyed byfire was only finished being built in 1904, nine years before it's destruction. The first known church on the site was built in the 13th centuary and this remained until 1840 when it was demolished and replaced by a larger building which in turn had to be largely demolished, being closed in 1894 as it was badly affected by mining subsidence. The tower was retained in the new buiding that was subsequently to be destroyed by fire and yet another church was then built on the site, this being finished in 1923.
His birth certificate shows his date of birth to be 23/10/1878 and the birth to have taken place at 26 Windmill End, Rowley Regis. The father's name shown as John PLUM and the mother's as Ellen PLUM formerly RODGERS. The father's occupation is shown as Labourer for the Canal Company and the birth was registered by a Hannah Winwood of 70 Windmill End, Dudley. Hannah's qualification forregistering the birth is stated as "Present at the Birth" and as she could not write her mark is given on the certificate.
It is believed that on the balance of probility this is the correct b.c. and the question is why does it show his mother's maiden name as RODGERS & not as SPENCER? Who was the informant Hannah WINWOOD? David's father, John, had a sister named Hannah and she may have married a WINWOOD. However it is equally possible that Ellen had a sister named Hannah who married a WINWOOD and it may be that Hannah was not a relationat all but this is believed to be less likely. It is possible that a sister of John may have been more likely to have been mistaken about Ellen's maiden name than would have been her own sister. Certainly it does not appear likely that Ellen had another name from a previous marriage as she is shown on her m.c. as a spinster and was only aged 19 at that time!
The 1881 census shows him as aged 2, living at home with his parents at 30 Windmill End, Dudley and having been born in Rowley Regis which was in Staffordshire at that time and was in the Dudley Registration District.
Research has shown that he was married in Great Addington in 1905 being resident in Broughton at that time and that his father was named John, the 1891 Census shows him to have been living with his parents (& siblings Hannah & William Henry) at 57 Halesowen Road, Dudley. He therefore moved to Broughton some time between 6/4/1891 and 8/9/1905. His father's b.c. (15/6/1850) shows that he was born at Darby End in Dudley.
1881 census shows him as Keeper Of St Neots Cemetery & living at Old Brick Kiln Road Cemetery House, St Neots.
